Eight big flops of IPL 7

The 2014 edition of the Indian Premier League T20 cricket championship saw big names failing completely. Big players means huge returns but things went completely opposite for many stars this time around. They tried their best to bail themselves out but there was no return for them.

The Openers
Chris Gayle and Michael Hussey who were brilliant in the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League couldn’t get going in 2014. Playing for Mumbai Indians for the first time, the senior Hussey recovered a bit in the final stages of the tournament but this was not enough to meet the expectations level. On the other hand, Chris Gayle, who was hampered by a hamstring injury, was kept silent by the rivals throughout the tournament.

Chris Gayle: Chris Gayle was not part of the playing XI in the first few matches but once he joined, he hardly played a significant part with his bat in the entire tournament. It was hard to believe that he scored just 196 runs from nine matches.

Michael Hussey: Michael Hussey was one of the biggest disappointments of all at the IPL this year. The leading run-scorer in the IPL last year, was in high demand after Chennai Super Kings refused to retain him for the seventh edition. But his union with Mumbai Indians, the defending champions, didn’t work out.  He managed just 209 runs from 9 matches. The lack of match practice because of his retirement from the international cricket made his life difficult in the IPL.

Captains
The leader of the side has to lead from the front but it was different in case of Virat Kohli, Kevin Pietersen and Shane Watson. These big lads couldn’t get going in the seventh edition, which was evident from the performance of their respective IPL franchises.

Virat Kohli: India’s premier batsman over the last three years, Virat Kohli was in a mood to lift the IPL trophy before it started. He accumulated only 359 for his IPL franchise, which is simply poor by his standard. The failing of his teammates and the pressure of captaincy got better of him.

Kevin Pietersen: Delhi Daredevils were very a happy unit after they asked Kevin Pietersen to lead their side in the cash rich league. However, it turned out to be a big mistake as Devils register nine consecutive defeats with no big score from KP. He scored 294 runs from 11 matches, averaging 29.

Shane Watson: Rajasthan Royals handed over the captaincy reigns to Shane Watson in order to get best out of him as a leader and an all-rounder. He showed some glimpses of his talent but this was not enough for a like Shane Watson. His form with the bat was not satisfactory while his bowling resulted in more runs than wickets. Watson scored 240 runs and picked up 7 wickets in the IPL, which was certainly not leading from the front.

Big Pay Cheques
The franchises of the Indian Premier League have always spent big on the talented players. They know that special talent requires special treatment when it comes to money but the results have been drastically bad at times and 2014 edition was no different. Yuvraj Singh and Dinesh Karthik were off-color despite getting huge bucks.

Yuvraj Singh: The left hand batsman and classy player of his day, Yuvraj Singh was bought at a whooping record price of 14 crores. The owners of Royal Challengers Bangalore thought they have bagged a match winner and their dreaming of landing first IPL title is going to come true this time. But his presence didn’t transform into results for RCB. He was totally out of touch in the first half of the tournament and by the time Yuvi came into his real best, it was too late for the team. With 376 runs and 5 wickets from 14 matches, he struggled a lot.

Dinesh Karthik: He was in good form for Mumbai Indians in 2013 which prompted Delhi Daredevils to spend 12.5 crores on him. In 14 matches, he scored 325 runs at a highly disappointing average of 23 with three half-centuries and a strike rate of 126. The team had to pay a heavy price for paying so much for the Tamil Nadu player. The pressure of money and the fall of early wickets were the prime reasons behind his failure.

Premier Fast Bowler
Dale Steyn has hardly disappointed in the cash rich league in the past but the seventh season was different for him. The leading fast bowler in world cricket had to go through painful memories at the hands of batsmen.

Dale Steyn: The spearhead of Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling attack had a horrible IPL 7.  He was hammered to all parts of the ground from even the unknown players who developed a special liking for his bowling. His failure with the ball was one of the reasons why Sunrisers failed to pick up the momentum in the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League. He was taken for 26 runs from RCB’s AB de Villiers and KKR’s Yusuf Pathan while MS Dhoni blasted him for 24 runs in one of their IPL matches. Dale Steyn picked up 11 wickets this season with an economy rate of over 7. Tiredness because of grueling international schedule was the reason behind his ordinary show.
