IPL 2014 Preview: Mumbai Indians vs. Sunrisers Hyderabad

This match will see two struggling outfits against each other. Mumbai Indians are desperate for their maiden win in the competition while Sunrisers are looking for more points. Can Mumbai bounce back or will it be Sunrisers day?
Mumbai Indians
Sitting at the bottom of the table, the defending champions must win this one in order to stay in the competition. Their batting has failed with big names managing just few runs in the tournament. Mike Hussey should be kept out from the rest of the matches while the likes of Rohit Sharma, Corey Anderson and Kieron Pollard need runs. Ambati Rayadu has accumulated runs but he has not got support from the other end. Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh will have to bowl with responsibility in order to turn this match in their favor. Malinga has been superb but he needs others to fire as well.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Aaron Finch and David Warner have scored runs for the team but the same can't be said about their skipper Shikhar Dhawan. The likes of Rahul, Y Venugopal Rao and Darren Sammy are their key batsmen in the middle order, who will have to put runs on the board. The bowlers have bowled well with Dale Steyn and Bhuvneshwar Kumar being consistent while leg-spinners Amit Mishra and Karn Sharma have restricted their rivals. They need their batsmen to put runs on the board so that they can win matches.
Verdict
Hyderabad based franchise has a better chance because of their strong batting and bowling unit.

Indian Premier League Preview: Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals are in a confident mood after thrashing RCB in their last match while Kolkata Knight Riders are unable to solve their problems. Will it be another win for Royals or will KKR register much needed win?
Rajasthan Royals
They got everything to deliver consecutive wins but have not gelled as a unit. Ajinkya Rahane and Sanju Samson are quality batsmen while Shane Watson, James Faulkner, Steven Smith and Kane Richardson are genuine match winners.  Their skipper Watson will have to make sure that his troops starts contributing as another loss could dent their title hopes. Rajat Bhatia has played well and the same could be said about Pravin Tambe, who is bowling superbly at the moment. Stuart Binny is another player who can win matches single handedly but he has failed to deliver this time.
Kolkata Knight Riders
They are in a mess because their leader has gone in a sleeping mode. After registering three consecutive ducks, he scored just 1 run in the last match. Isn’t pathetic?  Gautam Gambhir has failed miserably in the ongoing edition of the IPLT20 7TH. Other important players have not performed on the expected lines. The most disappointing has been Yusuf Pathan, who is unable to score runs season after season but still retains his place in the playing eleven. Sunil Narine has been their star performer so far but he needs support from his batsmen.
Verdict
Rajasthan Royals have a better chance because of their team formation.

IPL 2014 Preview: Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Delhi Daredevils

Delhi Daredevils
After losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Devils have a tough task against inform Kolkata Knight Riders. All eyes will be on Kevin Pietersen's availability and if he is able to play in this match, it will be a big boost for Delhi Daredevils. Murali Vijay, Dinesh Karthik and Manoj Tiwary has performed exceptionally well in the past seasons of the Indian Premier League but their performance in the first match was disappointing. The team management should promote JP Duminy and Ross Taylor up the order as these played well and took their team to a respectable total. The Delhi based franchise had problems in the bowling department as well. Mohammad Shami was the sole performer from the side while rest of the lot just filled numbers. They need massive turn around in today's match.
Kolkata Knight Riders

  1. The Knight Riders batted with a plan. After losing Gautam Gambhir early, the veteran Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey played smartly. They built their innings and then went on rampage, which took Mumbai Indians bowlers by a surprise. Robin Uthappa and Shakib-al-Hasan couldn't score but it was due to the less availability of balls. Yusuf Pathan is not in the team for this match as he has gone to be with his wife, who has given birth to their baby boy. However, there are enough players in the team who can fill in his position. The Gambhir led team was clinical in the bowling department, restricting Mumbai batters easily. Morne Morkel, Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla are the bowlers who could cause problems for the Devils batsmen.
Verdict
The match is looking in favor of the Knight Riders because of better resources and an experience captain.

Teams
Delhi Daredevils: Kevin Pietersen (c), Dinesh Karthik (wk), JP Duminy, Ross Taylor, Mayank Agarwal, Murali Vijay, Manoj Tiwary, Saurabh Tiwary, Milind Kumar, Jimmy Neesham, Mohammed Shami, Jaydev Unadkat, Shahbaz Nadeem, Jayant Yadav, Rahul Shukla, Wayne Parnell, HS Sharath, Laxi Ratan Shukla, Kedar Jadhav, Siddharth Kaul, Rahul Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Nathan Coulter-Nile.

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ambati Rayudu, Pragyan Ojha, Aditya Tare, Jasprit Bumrah, Jalaj Saxena, Pawan Suyal, Sushant Marathe, C.M. Gautam, Apoorv Wankhade, Shreyas Gopal, Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, Michael Hussey, Corey Anderson, Josh Hazelwood, Marchant de Lange, Krishmar Santokie, Ben Dunk.

Royal Challengers Bangalore
A confident looking Royal Challengers Bangalore would like to carry on the winning momentum in their second match against Mumbai Indians. This star filled franchise defeated Delhi Daredevils in their first match with bowlers and batsmen contributing in the winning cause. Apart from the bowlers and Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh deserves a special mention. The struggling all-rounder scored a brilliant half century to setup RCB’s win. There won’t be any change in the batting order until and unless Chris Gayle is fit. Yuvarj Singh, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Albie Morkel are quality batsmen who can win matches single handedly that too in a span of few overs. The team management should omit Ashok Dinda, who proved very expensive in the first match. He has a habit of leaking too many runs and this has been his problem since last few seasons in the Indian Premier League.

Mumbai Indians
They lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in their opening match of this season and would be under tremendous pressure to achieve positive result. Michael Hussey has to deliver for them in the opening position while Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Corey Anderson and Kieron Pollard will have to bat sensibly in this match. T20 is all about momentum and not reckless hitting, which we saw from the Indians batsmen. Malinga, Harbhajan and Zaheer was superb but same can’t be said about other bowlers. They have to play as a collective unit against the Challengers. Sachin Tendulkar is their icon and he must have given them some tips about holding themselves in the pressure moments of the match.

Verdict
Royal Challengers Bangalore have an edge over their opponents because of better team composition but make no mistake as Mumbai Indians have the squad to bounce back from any position.

Teams
RCB: Virat Kohli (C), AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Yuvraj Singh, Mitchell Starc, Albie Morkel, Varun Aaron, Ashok Dinda, Parthiv Patel, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ravi Rampaul, Nic Maddinson, Harshal Patel, Vijay Zol, Abu Nechim, Sachin Rana, Shadab Jakati, Sandeep Warrier, Tanmay Mishra, Yogesh Takawale, Yuzwendra Chahal.

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (C), Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Harbhajan Singh, Ambati Rayudu, Michael Hussey, Zaheer Khan, Pragyan Ojha, Corey Anderson, Josh Hazlewood, CM Gautam, Aditya Tare, Apoorv Wankhade, Marchant de Lange, Krishmar Santokie, Ben Dunk, Pawan Suyal, Sushant Marathe, Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Gopal, Jalaj Saxena.

Rajasthan Royals
The Royals have retained Ajinkya Rahane, Shane Watson, Stuart Binny, Sanju Samson and James Faulkner, the five who played an important role in their success in the previous edition of the cash rich league. Unmukt Chand, the new entry, will open the innings with Ajinkya Rahane. Apart from Watson and Faulkner, the team could play Steven Smith and Tim Southee. However, Brad Hodge is another contender for the playing XI. Abhishek Nayar and Rajat Bhatia are the two capable all-rounders in the team while the spinning duties will remain in the hands of Pravin Tambe. They don't have big Indian stars in their squad.

Sunrisers Hyderabad
The team from Hyderabad had a great auction process. They have retained some of their stars while also managed to bag some famous faces in this format of the game. David Warner and Aaron Finch should play in the opening game and they will form an effective top three with Captain Shikhar Dhawan. Darren Sammy and Dale Steyn should be the other two foreign stars in the playing XI. Ishant Sharma will bowl alongside Steyn while there won't be any changes in the spin department as Amit Mishra and Karan Sharma had an impressive outing in the sixth season of the cash rich league. The presence of Irfan Pathan in the squad also gives Sunrisers Hyderabad a much required balance.

Verdict
I will go with Sunrisers Hyderabad because of their strong bowling unit.

Teams
Rajasthan Royals: Shane Watson (c), Ajinkya Rahane, Brad Hodge, Sanju Samson, Stuart Binny, Ankush Bains, James Faulkner, Pravin Tambe, Kevon Cooper, Unmukt Chand, Steven Smith, Ben Cutting, Deepak Hooda, Iqbal Abdullah, Karun Nair, Vikramjeet Malik, Abhishek Nayar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Kane Richardson, Dishant Yagnik (wk), Tim Southee, Rahul Tewatia, Ankit Sharma, Amit Mishra.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Shikhar Dhawan (c), David Warner, Aaron Finch, Irfan Pathan, Srikkanth Anirudha, Darren Sammy, Naman Ojha (wk), Parvez Rasool, Dale Steyn, Amit Mishra, Karn Sharma, Ishant Sharma, Ricky Bhui, Amit Paunikar, Moises Henriques, Ashish Reddy, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jason Holder, Chama Milind, Manpreet Juneja, KL Rahul, Brendan Taylor, Prasanth Parmeswaran, Venugopal Rao, KL Rahul.
Note-The Royals have retained Ajinkya Rahane, Shane Watson, Stuart Binny, Sanju Samson and James Faulkner, the five who played an important role in their success in the previous edition of the cash rich league. Unmukt Chand, the new entry, will open the innings with Ajinkya Rahane.

IPL 2014 Preview: Chennai Super Kings vs. Kings XI Punjab

Chennai Super Kings
This outfit has dominated Indian Premier League since its inception. However, this year it won’t be that easy as they are under the scanner of the Supreme Court for the alleged involvement of some of its officials in the spot fixing saga. Apart from this, CSK has changed a lot in terms of players. There is no Michael Hussey, Murali Vijay, Albie Morkel and few more in the team while the likes of Brendon McCullum, Samuel Badree and some others have come in as the new entries. The presence of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin, whom they retained, is enough to boost the confidence of the other players. Samuel Badree could prove their trump card as he is in superb form at the moment. The fast bowling is looking quite weak with no great pace bowler. Ben Hilfenhaus, Mohit Sharma and Ishwar Pandey are good but are not lethal.

Kings XI Punjab This franchise from Punjab has altogether built a new squad for the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League. They have managed to snap up Virender Sehwag, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh and many others in the auction process but where is good Indian talent. The whole world knows that a team is allowed to field four foreign stars and the remaining seven has to come from India. Even there is no big Indian name in the bowling department. I know players like Sehwag, Bailey and the other foreign players could win matches single handedly but a team need quality Indian players as well which are not there in the Kings XI Punjab squad.Verdict My money is on Chennai Super Kings because they are more balanced than their opponents.

Teams Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni (c), Suresh Raina, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Faf du Plessis, Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith, Ashish Nehra, Mohit Sharma, Samuel Badree, Ben Hilfenhaus, Matt Henry, B Aparajith, Mithun Manhas, Ishwar Pandey, Pawan Negi, Vijay Shankar, Ronit More, John Hastings. Kings XI Punjab: George Bailey (c), David Miller, Manan Vohra, Virender Sehwag, Mitchell Johnson, Cheteshwar Pujara, Shaun Marsh, Wriddhaman Saha, Thisara Perera, Glenn Maxwell, Rishi Dhawan, Anureet Singh, Sandeep Sharma, Akshar Patel, Beuran Hendricks, Karanveer Singh, Murali Kartik, Shivam Sharma, Shardul Thakur, L Balaji, Parvinder Awana, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Mandeep Singh. Note- Samuel Badree could prove their trump card as he is in superb form at the moment. The fast bowling is looking quite weak with no great pace bowler. IPL 2014 Preview: Mumbai Indians vs. Kolkata Knight Riders

Defending champions Mumbai Indians will take on the Kolkata Knight Riders in the inaugural match of this year’s IPL. The champion team is full of match winners and has retained their core group while Kolkata Knight Riders have also managed to bag their last season’s players through auction process. Both teams will look to get off to a winning start in the competition.
Mumbai Indians
Michael Hussey, the new addition in team, has been successful at the top of the order for the CSK in the previous edition of the league. He will be hoping of doing the same for his new IPL franchise. Rohit Sharma, the captain of the team, is an important player for the Indians in the middle order while Ambati Rayudu has done exceptionally well for them in the past. Kieron Pollard and Corey Anderson are match winners, who are capable of winning matches single handedly. The fast bowling will rely on Lasith Malinga, who has been the face of their fast bowling. Mumbai Indians are happy after acquiring the services of Zaheer Khan, which is enough to gives their bowling an edge. Spinning duo of Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha are the leading spinners in the team. These two could cause problems for the opposite side on the turning tracks of UAE.
Mumbai Indians Likely XI: Michael Hussey, Aditya Tare (wk), Rohit Sharma (c), Ambati Rayudu, Kieron Pollard, Corey Anderson, Harbhajan Singh, Apporva Wankhede/Jalaj Saxena, Pragyan Ojha, Zaheer Khan, Lasith Malinga.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Their batting order is almost same with Gautam Gambhir and Jacques Kallis at the top of the order, which gives their batting a much required stability. Gambhir could open with Robin Uthappa to keep right and left combination going. However, the team has some worries in form of Yusuf Pathan, who has not played well since joining KKR. I know he has played well in this year’s domestic competitions but IPL is altogether a different game, where he will face world class bowlers. Andre Russell and Shakib-al-Hasan are the two dangerous all-rounder’s in the side but they have to deliver this time for their team. Their bowling unit is well settled with Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla in their side. Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar and Morne Morkel could chip in with wickets in the opening match against Mumbai Indians. These three have played lots of matches in the previous editions of the cash rich league.
Kolkata Knight Riders Likely XI: Gautam Gambhir (c), Robin Uthappa*, Jacques Kallis, Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan, Shakib Al Hasan, Morne Morkel , Piyush Chawla, Sunil Narine, R Vinay Kumar, Umesh Yadav.
Verdict: Mumbai Indians have a better chance of winning this one because of their settled squad in all the departments of the game.

KKR: Fighting for Glory IPL 7

The team co-own by Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan had to go through a lot in the first four editions of the IPL. KKR were failures in terms of performance while there was no end to controversies related to them. They then bought Gautam Gambhir for 2.2 million dollars in the IPL auction (2011) with a clear view of doing something different. Gambhir has an attacking mindset which paid rich dividend for the team as they finished inside the top four in 2011. He learned from the mistakes and made sure that they lifted the trophy in 2012. KKR won their first title on account of some brilliant performances from its players. However, they couldn't live upto the billing and finished seventh in the next edition of the league. Apart from retaining Gautam Gambhir and Sunil Narine, the team management has invested further Rs. 59 crore to form a strong unit this time, which can fight for its lost glory. The batting reins will be in the hands of captain Gambhir, Manish Pandey, Robin Uthappa and Chris Lynn. The allround skill of veteran all-rounder Jacques Kallis, Yusuf Pathan, Shakib-al-Hasan, Ryan ten Doeschate and Andre Russell is enough to add firepower to this famous IPL franchise. Knight Riders have one of the most decent looking bowling attacks of this year's IPL. Umesh Yadav, Morne Morkel, Vinay Kumar and Pat Cummins can win games solely on the base of their bowling while the likes of Piyush Chawla and Sunil Narine have already proved themselves in the Indian Premier League. KKR is looking solid for the new campaign and could finish inside the top four in the upcoming season.

Best Buy
Kallis was once again added to the team after KKR owners bought him for Rs. 5.5 crore. He has played an important role in the success of the Riders and could repeat his magic again. The right hand batsman has scored 2276 runs and has taken 61 wickets in the 90 matches. He can play a sheet anchor role while has all the shots to go on rampage if the situation demands.

India Premier League Season 7: Mumbai Indians Preview

The most high profile team of the Indian Premier League 7 finally managed to land the IPL trophy in the last season. Mumbai Indians got better of Chennai Super Kings in the all important finale. Their title win was the result of the hard work put in by the team management and the players. The players were serious and committed from the start and wanted to lift the cup for Sachin Tendulkar, who was playing in his last edition. They will be under tremendous pressure of retaining their title. Rohit Sharma, their charismatic skipper, will have the responsibility of leading his side to glory. However, he is going to miss Sachin Tendulkar, who is no more part of the team. Along with Rohit Sharma, the team has retained Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard and Ambati Rayudu. Anil Kumble, John Wright and the owners have done a commendable job by adding Michael Hussey in the team. The former Australian and the versatile opener in the Indian Premier League, is going to add more flavor to the batting unit. He was the highest run getter in 2013 and can do wonders for the Mumbai Indians. Apart from him, the sensational Corey Anderson, is the new member of the decorated squad. He has taken his game to new heights in a short span of time and has the talent to win games for the Mumbai based franchise. Zaheer Khan has been bought back in the side while the arrival of Hazlewood and Marchant de Lange is going to strengthen the fast bowling battery. Mumbai Indians have a good squad but they have fallen short on the Indian power in their middle order.

Best Buy
Michael Hussey has the experience of playing in the Indian Premier League, which will help Mumbai Indians immensely. He was a champion cricketer in his international days and his advice will do a world of good for Rohit Sharma. Hussey is still known for his quality batting, who can score against any sort of bowling arsenal.

Shahid Afridi has become a cult

The sub-continent countries are developing economies with lots of emphasis on the future growth and the plans to combat daily struggles. The people living in these countries are so bound by the problems that they engaged themselves in different things, which could provide them solace. Cricket is not only the game in some of the Asian countries but it is a medium to fight with the struggles of the life. The cricketers are often labeled as the messiah's who have the power to heal all the worries. It was Sachin Tendulkar in the beginning for India while the baton has now been passed to MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. The same could be said about Pakistan. Pakistan is a small country which is located on the Asian continent. The place has been marred by continuous power struggle between political parties and the army. The anti national elements have always created problems in Pakistan, which has led to never ending bloodshed. The common masses of this country have always indulged their mind in the game of cricket in order to find peace. Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Imran Khan and many more have enjoyed celebrity status because of being the cricketers. After the retirement of the greats, the country has developed a special liking for the dynamic Shahid Afridi.

His failures haven't been taken seriously by the people of Pakistan. I still remembered what Wasim Akram had to say after Afridi threw his wicket away against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup. The former Pakistan player was furious and lambasted Afridi for his poor approach at a time when his team was in dire straits against the minnows of world cricket. According to Akram, it was sad to see a cricketer playing reckless shot after spending 17 years in cricket. However, the criticism was transformed into love when the same player played two match winning knocks against arch rivals India and Bangladesh. The same man who was after him went on record to say that he has forgiven all his mistakes. His couldn't perform in the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh but there is hardly anyone who is after his head. This is how Pakistanis are, no matter what is their status. Afridi had the luxury which no cricketer have ever enjoyed in Pakistan despite achieving super star status. He walked into the team which allowed him to be himself without any concern of low scores. The fans got so attached to his name that there was no one, who talked about the need of correcting his rash game. I know Afridi has failed a lot in his international career but people are so obsessed with him that they feel he can perform in the next game. Afridi has become the living dream of a country which is struggling to stand on its feet. Pakistan is a place, which believes in messiahs and Afridi is certainly one of them. It is for this reason Afridi will play as long as he wants to play.

The right hand batsman has become the hope of the masses, who look upto him every time they are buried under the hardships. The citizens of Pakistan love Afridi because he has given them numerous reasons to express their happiness. From his breathtaking knocks to match winning bowling spells, Afridi's performances have been taken hand to hand. The common man is not interested in his records or statistics but the number of good moments he has given them. Boom Boom is the word which we usually take to define his brand of batting. His fans still considers him as the one who can win matches from any situation. He has played only 27 Tests because he has never enjoyed this format. Isn't that funny? He has stated in one of his interviews that he was not made for the longest format of the game. Afridi has so far played 377 ODI matches but only has 7,619 runs at an average of 23.44, which undermine his talent. One wonders as why he is not able to score regularly. The problem has been the lack of temperament and patience. He hardly believes in building his innings through one or two's. The moment he arrives at the crease, his hunger for boundaries starts creping in, which ultimately leads to his premature downfall. His career would have ended in countries where people demand consistent performances from their national heroes. There is no alternative for the below par scores but situation is completely different in Pakistan. He has become the expectation of the country and there is no way of killing or burying expectations. I know he won't change his style of batting but all he can to do is to calm himself down in order to extend his stay at the crease.

This will help him in scoring more runs for his team, which his important from the prospect of winning any game. This is the only way left for him to repay the trust and the time people have invested in watching his performance over the last two decades. When this unique talent finally decides to call time on his long international career, he would leave behind a legacy, full of love, respect and trust from his followers.

Stop measuring coaches by the results

We as cricket fanatics have a habit of judging everything by the results. If a team is winning matches, they are showered with praises and blessing but if results are hard to come by, the level of criticism is beyond imagination. The world is gripped with data and statistic mania and it is growing with each and every passing day. Is this correct? Are we over relying too much on the results? The answer is yes but this not the exact way of looking at the overall picture. The game of cricket has always been cruel to coaches in particular. They have been placed under axing swords series after series. Coaches are often taken to task if their respective teams are not playing great cricket. Dav Whatmore has always performed superbly as a coach but things went bad when he went to Pakistan in order to make their national team more equipped of winning matches. The expectations were not meant, meaning he has to leave his post. He is the same man who led Sri Lanka to World Cup title in 1996. Whatmore was highly successful with the Under-19 Indian team. He was the coach of the Indian team which won the Under-19 cricket world cup under the captaincy of Virat in 2008. The point which I am trying to make is that results are not the best parameter to judge the qualities of a coach. Whatmore was good if plans were falling in place but as soon as situations started becoming bad, he was labeled as a failure by the Pakistan authorities. The same could be said about Andy Flower, who was recently sacked by the England and Wales Cricket Board after the poor performance of the English team on the Australian tour. The former Zimbabwean player would have been shocked after learning his fate after just one big failure in his decorated tenure. He was one of the reasons behind building one of the strongest England sides in the last decade.

However, this hardly mattered as he was shown the door. On the opposite, the Australians are going gaga over the role played by Darren Lehman in the success of the current national team. According to many, he is the wonder man of the Australian cricket, who was struggling to breath prior to his appointment. Coaches don't score runs or take wickets and neither have any role to play in the selection of the team by the selectors so there is no point of measuring their acts purely on the basis of results. They are not the leaders of the sides they coached. We have more often over read the importance of the coach. We think that players are just the dummies, who need direction and a plan to follow by their respective coaches. To be fair and frank, a coach can only do a filling job. He can tell a batsman and bowler about the points which can solve their shortcomings. The players at the international level are talented enough to decide what is right and wrong for them and coach has no role to play in their decision. If a batsman is bowled playing a wide ball outside the off stump, there is nothing which a coach can do. Same is the case with a bowler, who has a habit of bowling full toss in place of Yorkers. The job of the coach is to create right environment for the players so that they can perform in the matches. Doing different things for different players is the mantra of success for the coaches.

It is no more a secret that every player is different and has altogether a different view of looking at things. The coaches are required to tackle their disciple in a manner which is helpful in raising their bar. Gary Kirsten followed this with the Indian team and was able to win the support and the trust of the players. He carried same practice to South Africa, which made him famous among the South African players. It should be about the stuff he has on his plate as a coach rather scratching our heads purely on the outcome of the tournaments and big ICC events. It is far from reality that coaches win tournament and the series. It is different in football where the manager is the selector, strategist and also looks after the contract of the players. The players are bound to follow his instructions and their places on the field are decided by him. In cricket a coach is not more than a support staff and many coaches have looked their job in the same way. They never interfere in the work ethics of a captain. There is no denying the fact that certain coaches add fun to the dressing room but they are not exactly behind winning the matches. Australia won the Ashes comfortably but giving all the credit to Darren Lehman is not the right to do. He was behind changing one or two things which triggered Australia's comeback but he was not the only reason who wrote Australian success against their arch rivals. The time has come wherein we need to define the boundaries and the areas which are must for judging the performance of a coach in any format of the game.

Sri Lanka Wins T20 World Cup

in Sports / Extreme Sports (submitted 2014-04-07)
The almighty has written something great for Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. This was said by the West Indian captain Darren Sammy after his side lost to Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup semifinal via Duckworth Lewis method. His words came true as the rainbow nation broke their World Cup finals jinx, beating India by 6 wickets in a one sided match. All the cricket pundits and fans had already declared Team India as the winner but Lankans had different plans in their mind. They bowled superbly when it mattered the most, restricting India on a partly score of 130 runs from the allotted 20 overs. The last four overs of the Indian innings produce just 19 runs with Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara bowling Yorkers and full length deliveries outside the off stump. Yuvraj Singh was forced to chock as he could manage just 11 runs off 21 balls while Dhoni had the similar story, accumulating 4 runs off 7 balls. Virat Kohli scored 77 off 58 balls but was left strangled at the non striker end. I know it is not right to criticize Yuvraj Singh but he deserves some part of the blame. Who was stopping him from taking singles? Why he was not willing to rotate the strike? The world was not asking him to go for big shots as things were not happening for him but he could have given strike to Virat instead of playing too many dot balls.

The inspiring spell from the bowlers brought some sort of confidence in the batsmen as well. After losing Kusal Perera cheaply, Dilshan and Mahela settled the nerves by playing some superb shot. However, Dilshan (18 runs) and Jayawardene (24 runs) couldn't carry till the end and lost the steam in the middle. There was some concern about Kumar Sangakkara's form but he delivered in the finale. His unbeaten 52 off 35 balls carried Lankan to their first major trophy in this format of the game. Thisara Perera also played a valuable knock of 23 runs off 14 balls. The title victory came at a right time as this was Jayawardene's and Sangakkara's last match. Apart from this edition, this team made it to the finale in 2009 and 2012 but finished as the second best team. They also lost the final of the fifty over World Cup in 2007 and 2011. However, the most recent accomplishment has taken away all the pains and sufferings of this team. Let's stand and salute their effort against their much decorated opponents.

T20 World Cup Final Preview: India vs. Sri Lanka

India
The moment has arrived for Team India to lift their second T20 World Cup Trophy. The only obstacle is Sri Lanka but they are no pushovers. Men in Blue won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 but a lot has changed since then. Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni are the only players who were present in the team in 2007. The remaining players will play in their first finale as far as shortest format is concern. The likes of Virat Kohli and others will give one hundred percent to land their first major trophy in this format of the game. Ajinkya Rahane played superbly in the last game against South Africa and will partner Rohit Sharma in the final. Virat Kohli is in the form of his life while Raina, Yuvraj and Dhoni have also contributed with the bat. There won't be any change in the spin department. The trio of R Ashwin, Amit Mishra and Ravindra Jadeja will have to restrict Lankan batsmen from going for big hits. Mohit Sharma could be the only casualty after the semifinal as he couldn't ball effectively. There are chances that Mohammad Shami will be drafted in his place.

Sri Lanka
The rainbow nation is the only team which is capable of stopping India from winning their second world title in the slam bang version of the game. This is Lanka's third final, having lost to Pakistan in 2009 and West Indies in 2012. Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara have already announced their retirement plans from this format after the current World Cup. These two legends will like to end on a high and it is upto them and the other players to win their maiden T20 World Cup. Dilshan, Kushal Perera, Thirimanne and Mathews could prove dangerous if they get going against the Indian team. Lankan bowling has already proved themselves in the previous matches of the event and there won't be any changes for the last game. Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara have all the variations to dismantle rivals batting lineup with Rangana Herath and Sachithra Senanayake could fox the batsmen with their turning deliveries. This team has more experience players when it comes to international cricket.
Verdict
I won't able to make a spot on prediction as both teams have equal chances of upsetting each other. Their batting is similar while there is hardly any difference in the spin department. Team which wins important phases of the match will emerge victorious in the end.
Teams
India (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Mohit Sharma/ Mohammed Shami

Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Mahela Jayawardene, 4 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 5 Lahiru Thirimanne, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 S Prasanna, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Sachithra Senanayake, 10 Lasith Malinga (capt), 11 Rangana Herath

Virat Kohli: A modern day genius

Virat Kohli has been contributing in Team India's success since the day he made his international debut. His most recent act of accomplishment came against South Africa in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. The rival team has scored 172 runs from the allotted 20 overs and chasing such a big total required some special effort. It came from none other than Virat Kohli who played just three dot balls in his 44 ball inning. The right hand batsman and the vice captain of the Indian team accumulated an unbeaten 72 runs, hitting 5 fours and 2 sixes. He paced his inning so well that Men in Blue never looked in trouble against the much decorated bowling lineup. Virat was severe against all the bowlers and his batting in front of Dale Steyn was impressive. MS Dhoni, the Indian captain was impressed by Kohli's performance. According to him, he is a special talent and players like him have help India in making progress. His views were accepted by Sourav Ganguly, who labeled Virat as genius. The former Indian captain even said that Virat is the best batsman he has seen in the international cricket. The prince of Kolkata wants him to continue in the same fashion. Apart from the current and former players, the fans have also lauded Virat's knock against South Africa.

This is not the first time that Kohli has come up with a special inning. He has played numerous match winning knocks game after game. One thing which I particularly like about him is his habit of soaking all the pressure. This guy has all the shots in his batting arsenal but it is important to execute them on the match day and boy he has done this with perfection. His batting is so special that other batsmen has started playing around him that too without any fear of burden and expectations. He has also responded well to this change and is seen playing risk free cricket irrespective of the format. Players like him are born once in many years. Sachin Tendulkar is rated as the best batsman of all time but let me remind everyone that Virat is going at a faster rate when it comes to scoring and match winning percentage. We all have seen Sachin getting carried away in tense matches but Kohli is made up of some brutal power, which doesn't allow him to bog down in front of the rivals. The current Indian fans are lucky to witness one of the best sporting talent across the globe. Let's pray that his willow give us more moments of joy and happiness in the near future.

T20 World Cup Semifinal Preview: India vs. South Africa

India Cricket Team
Team India has played brilliant cricket in the T20 World Cup. They are the only unbeaten side in the tournament and the credit should be given to some smart bowling from the spinners. However, the match against South Africa won't be that easy for the Men in Blue. The pressure of the semifinal could cause problems for the inform team. Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh have some sort of form under their belt while the likes of Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina have batted with responsibility in almost all the matches. The concern area is Shikhar Dhawan as he has failed miserably in Bangladesh but there is no time left to replace him. He has to do something to make his performance count in the semifinal. The spin trio will once again have the say in the proceedings. Amit Mishra, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have bowled well in tandem and the same is expected from them in today's match. Dhoni will be in dilemma about Mohammad Shami and Mohit Sharma. Shami is playing continuous cricket since long and has looked rusty in the tournament. He is tired for sure and it's high time to play Mohit Sharma in the last four.

South Africa
They are facing lots of problems in their batting department. Apart from Amla, JP Duminy and AB de Villiers, the rest of the lot has not clicked for them. Quinton de Kock, David Miller, FAF du Plessis and Albie Morkel have found life difficult in the tournament. There is no doubt that these four are genuine match winners in the shortest format of the game but we haven't seen any such thing from them in the T20 World Cup. Imran Tahir has bowled effectively sofar in the World Cup but he still lacks in quality and variation. Indian batsmen are known for their quality against the spinners and they could dictate terms to Tahir. Dale Steyn is one bowler who could trouble rivals with his fierce fast bowling. He is the best in the business at the moment and the Men in Blue will have to tackle him smartly.

Verdict
I am gunning for India's victory because of their spin power. The whole world knows that South African batsmen are not comfortable against quality spin and the match with India could end their world cup campaign on a sore note

Teams
India (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Ajinkya Rahane/ Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Mohit Sharma/ Mohammed Shami
South Africa (probable) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis (capt.), 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller, 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Beuran Hendricks/ Aaron Phangiso, 11 Imran Tahir

How West Indies won against Pakistan?

Pakistan was considered favorite against West Indies but it all changed in a span of few overs. West Indies not only won the match but also handed Pakistan one of their heaviest defeat in the shortest format of the game. Let's take a closer look at the points, which proved decisive in the end.

Fire power of Darren Sammy and Dwayne Bravo
West Indies was in trouble since the first over of the match as they kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. They were 81/5 in 13.5 overs and crossing even 100 looked impossible. However Captain Darren Sammy and his compatriot Darren Bravo had some other plans in their mind. The two came together and destroyed everything which came in their way. The duo added 71 runs off just 32 balls for the sixth wicket in a barrage of sixes and fours to help their side to 166. Bravo (46 runs off 26 balls), Sammy (42 off 20 balls) once again took their team to a reasonably good total. It was their magic which broke Saeed Ajmal's back. The best off-spinner in the world conceded 41 runs from his quota of four overs, which is not an easy thing to do against a quality spinner.

Magic of Badree and Narine
The Pakistani fans were not worried as their team was full of explosive batsmen. Ahmed Shehzad had scored a century in the previous match against Bangladesh while the likes of Akmal brothers and others were also scoring runs. They thought chasing 167 was always in their team's control. However, the confidence and the trust were damaged when Pakistan folded on the score of 82 runs thus losing the match by 84 runs. Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine took three wickets each which didn't let Pakistan settle down at any stage. The batsmen from the sub-continent nation were tamed down easily as they played suicidal shot against the spin duo of West Indies.

Winning formula from Saqlain Mushtaq
The best thing West Indies did was to appoint Saqlain Mushtaq as their assistant coach in 2014. His appointment has paid rich dividends for the team. Batsmen have developed a better technique against the spinners while the tweakers of the team are bowling reasonably well even against the best in the business. Their most recent match against Pakistan is the perfect example of Saqlain's contribution. It was his knowledge and tips which helped Sammy and Bravo in scoring lots of runs on the bowling of Saeed Ajmal. They played Ajmal confidently, taking him for plenty in his third and the fourth over of the innings. Even the performance of the Windies spinners was of the highest quality. Badree and Narine bowled unbelievably well and didn't let Pakistan batsmen to break the shackles.
