Shahid Afridi: A Genuine Match Winner by Cricket today

After Shahid Afridi led Pakistan to a famous victory against Bangladesh, I wonder whether he has finally decided to value his wicket or it is just another flash in the pan. The match winning all-rounder has a habit of performing poorly after playing some crucial knocks in some of the games. Boom Boom is the word which we usually speak to define his brand of batting. His fans still considers him as the one who can win matches from any situation. He has played some explosive innings over the course of his career but the last few years have seen downfall in his batting capabilities. Fast forward to this year's Asia, he was required to launch himself against Bangladesh in order to win a game for his side. Afridi walked in with Pakistan at 222/5 (the team was chasing 327 runs), still needing in excess of 10 runs per over. The dangerous batsman clobbered Bangladeshi bowlers all over the park, hitting seven sixes and tow fours, accumulating 59 runs off 25 balls.

This was enough to turn the tie in Pakistan's favor and by the time he departed with the score at 294, he had already done the damage. His knock was crucial in Pakistan's historical victory. He handed the same sort of stuff to the Indian bowlers but in less quantity. Prior to Bangladesh's match, his team was in a spot of bother against their arch rivals. However, the whole world including Team India knew that Afridi has a talent to destroy Indian hopes. The fear was transferred into reality with Afridi scoring an unbeaten 34 of 18 balls to leave India in a state of shock. The frontier was won against the main competitors.

One wonders as why he is not able to score regularly. The problem has been the lack of temperament and patience. He hardly believes in building his innings through one or two's. The moment he arrives at the crease, his hunger for boundaries starts creping in, which ultimately leads to his premature downfall. Afridi has so far played 377 ODI matches but only has 7,619 runs at an average of 23.44, which undermine his talent. It is too late for him to change his records drastically but he can still help Pakistan in winning matches. All he has to do is to calm himself down in order to extend his stay at the crease. This will help him in scoring more runs for his team, which his important from the prospect of winning any game. The final of the Asia Cup is not far behind and so is T20 World Cup. If Afridi starts taking his batting seriously, don't be surprised if you see Pakistan lifting the Asia Cup and World Cup trophy.
